DIY Dollar Store Kitchen Backsplash

Updated: Nov 13

Okay, so when I first gave our kitchen a simple paint cosmetic facelift, I ordered a stick on wallpaper faux tile backsplash that I loved, but unfortunately it did not withstand the heat of our appliances.

Though I loved the peel and stick backsplash it wrinkled on one corner due to the heat from our Air fryer. So I knew I would have to find a new budget friendly solution and this DIY Dollar Store Kitchen Backsplash was the perfect fix. We do intend to add actual tile backsplash in the future but at the moment an easy budget friendly fix was the way to go. TBH I have been wanting to try this particular DIY for a while now.

I love the look and character of a French country style kitchen that this faux tile has and when it comes to adding the real deal, I definitely will be looking at something similar to add as our backsplash. I bought these from Dollartree and for $1.25 a piece and having paint on hand, this project cost me less than $20.

The pattern again is what I wanted and I obviously knew I'd be painting them. These have an adhesive backing and all I did was use some extra bonding glue to make sure they stayed on. These should come off easily when the day comes to take them off of the wall. After I placed then on the wall and making adjustments and cuts where necessary especially around the outlets, I let them dry overnight. The next day there were a few corners that needed extra bonding so I made sure to add glue and let that dry for an hour or so, and got started on painting, which by the way I used leftover paint that we used on the walls. I wasn't about to try to get creative with colors, or accent color because I wanted this to be quick and done.

After a couple of coats including in between dry time, I went ahead and siliconed along the edges and visible lines. Let that cure overnight and sealed with one of my favorite poly sealers Satin Clear Water-Based Interior Fast Drying Polyurethane. I like to keep this on hand for any indoor projects that may need sealing.

Below is a picture of the peel and stick wallpaper backsplash I previously had added and it's great quality from Wayfair but unfortunately I should have known better in regard to the placement.

And below is how it looks now, I honestly love that there is some dimension and character to the backsplash now and though it also blends in just like the one before, if yo get close enough and in the light of day it actually looks very pretty. These pictures do not do it justice.

I thought about adding some accent distressed details to it so it could stand out more but at the moment I am living with it and loving it. You never know what I might do next. (;
