Guest Room Update + FBMP Finds | Adding the personal touches into the guest room has been fun but it has also taken a little longer than I anticipated. I've been taking my time in being mindful of the accessories and details that I want in this room because of it being such a quaint and limited space. But I've also been working on other projects in between.
Buying new things like bedding and pillows, etc are necessary, I have decisions to make when it comes to bedding because I want it to be comfy and lush almost like a hotel like feel. But when it comes to furnishings or decorating I prefer to thrift. All of the furnishings in this room are from FBMP and for this home and what I want in our home this time around has been something I want to take my time with because I want it to be mostly long term not just temporary. Unlike our last home which took me a long time to figure out what I wanted not to mention how awkward the spaces were to work with, this home definitely has a different feel from our last. It has a more european modern yet traditional feel if you will. It's definitely a style that I've been craving to have for a long time, literally from my early 20's I've been obsessed with european style homes. So investing in furniture and decor that is definitely something I want to be around for a long time whether its secondhand, vintage, antique or new, if it changes it will only get moved to a different spot in the house most likely.
This home may have different from our last when it comes to aesthetic. But totally the same when it comes to coziness and comfort. Though the items in this guest room have been kept minimal the cozy is hardly lacking. I walk by this room every day and it makes me happy with how it is now so I can imagine how much more happy it'll make me as I continue to add more to it. Although there may be a few more details to be added or finished, I'm just so happy with it as it is already and I even I want to sleep in there which I'm sure I will eventually.
Things that have changed from my last Guest Room Progress post, besides the antique bed frame makeover. I eventually found a mirror with the same scallop detail on it as the bed though not at all from the same set, when I saw this mirror I knew I needed it and it was free. Eventually I found the antique dresser for $20. Decided to paint both of these pieces the exact same color as the bed frame which is Clay by Behr Chalk Paint. I wanted to keep things again simple and without too much contrast so that it wouldn't take away from the cozy and relaxing feel that I wanted in this room plus it gives me french vibes and i love the whimsy feel as well.
All of these pieces are chalk painted and sealed with furniture wax.
I just how love how these two pieces look together and you wouldn't even know that they weren't at all related as one and the glass top that came with the vintage dresser was what did it for me. It just gives it something extra, like an accessory you didn't know you needed and elevates the look of it.
As you can see I moved a full length mirror in here as well because you could never have enough mirrors and it almost gives the room a bigger feel because it expands the light that comes into this room.
Though I thought I had found the lamps I wanted for this room, I soon realized they were too small and without looking I stumbled across these vintage porcelain Chinese lamps and I fell in love, besides them only costing me $15 for the pair, I knew I couldn't pass them up and the colors were just perfect for the color scheme I've incorporated into the guest room. I love that there's blues, both light and dark, mauve, and hints of green besides the dark hues form the night stands which were also FBMP finds and I love that they don't match at all. The maroon color in the lamps just give this room the warm tone it needed.
Then I happened to find this horse print which again is such a whimsy feel and because we live in Utah and are surrounded by horses, not to mention the fact that I've loved horses since I was a little girl, it only seemed suitable to add this print here. I actually painted the frame gold and the inset border to match the colors within the print and just so happen to match the lamp colors as well.
One of the nightstands is an antique with an octagon round top and the other is just sleek, modern, tall and smaller in size. I just love the contrast and that they don't take up too much room on either side and the lamps fit perfectly on them. I decided to keep the original lamp shades on the lamps for now because for one they're in good shape and two, until I find something better suited, I can live with them as is. Those lamps are literally and currently my favorite in the house right now.
I did exchange the chair I had in here for a more rustic wicker chair because the chair that was here originally was meant for my downstairs desk and I wanted something a little more comfortable in here. I have yet to find or make a cushion seat for it. But I love the imperfectness of it. I don't mind at all that its faded because like everything else in our home, not everything is perfect. I've always had a love for imperfect furnishings unless they're beyond damaged and I paint them. But even then, my paint jobs are sometimes imperfect on purpose.
When you mix quirky with clean and sleek or newer pieces, that's what usually gives a room or home more character and everyone's home is different but the character is what makes a home unique and different from everyone else's.
Eventually I will be adding trim and moulding in each of the rooms, but we're slowly getting there. And it will be a slow process.
Currently I have blackout curtains in here from Homegoods, I do want to ad drop down shades in here as well. Keeping the curtains simple was key because the bedding prints, art and lamps and eventually rug, are the showstoppers.
Again, I love this room and the cozy and comfortable feel of it so far and I can't wait to find a comforter and quilt for the bed plus more pillows to give it a cozier feel.
I'll make sure to update you as more progress happens.
